Birmingham & West Midlands

“Indian wedding” covers an enormous range. A Gujarati wedding, a Punjabi wedding, a South Indian wedding and a Bengali wedding share almost nothing in structure beyond the fact that both families will care deeply about who appears in the photographs.

Over 20 years we have photographed across most of them in Birmingham and the West Midlands. What follows is what actually differs, so you can judge whether we know your wedding or are guessing at it.

Regional differences

Indian weddings are not one wedding

Gujarati

Ganesh Puja, Jaan arrival, Ponkhana at the door where the groom is greeted by the bride’s mother, Jai Mala, Mandap rituals, Saptapadi and Vidaai. Garba and Mandvo often run as separate evenings beforehand. We have photographed the Mandvo ceremony specifically and know it is easy to miss because it happens at home, early, with no formal schedule.

Punjabi

Chooda, Jago, Sangeet, Baraat, Milni and Doli, with either an Anand Karaj or a Mandap ceremony at the centre. Covered in full on our Punjabi wedding photography page.

South Indian

Earlier starts — often a muhurtham before sunrise — shorter ceremonies, and a very different visual palette. Silk, gold, jasmine and temple light rather than banqueting-hall uplighting. The timing alone catches out photographers used to a 2pm Mandap.

Bengali and Marathi

Gaye Holud and Shubho Drishti for Bengali families; Antarpat and Saptapadi for Marathi. Smaller, more intimate ceremonies as a rule, where an intrusive photographer ruins the atmosphere faster than at a 500-guest reception.

For the religious ceremony itself, see our Hindu and Sikh wedding pages.

What we get asked

The questions Indian families actually ask us

“Will you know what is happening?”

Yes, and it is the whole job. A photographer who has to ask what comes next is already a step behind the moment. We know the Kanyadaan is the father giving the bride away, that the Saptapadi is seven steps and not one, and that the Vidaai is where the family will want us most.

“Can you handle 400 guests and a group photo list?”

We ask both families for their lists in advance and work through them quickly, by name, with someone from each side helping to gather people. Done badly this eats ninety minutes of your reception. Done properly it takes twenty.

“Will you be there for all of it?”

That depends on what you book, which is why we quote on your actual events rather than selling a fixed package that stops at an arbitrary hour.

“Do you understand the food, the dancing and the chaos?”

We have eaten at a few hundred of them. The chaos is the wedding. We photograph it rather than trying to tidy it.

Photography and film

Photography and film from one coordinated company

Indian weddings run long, across multiple events and often multiple venues. That is exactly the situation where two separate suppliers cost you more than money.

With one team: the photographer and filmmaker work around each other rather than into each other’s shots, there is one timeline instead of two, group photographs are requested once, ceremony audio is recorded properly, and the film and the images are graded to look like the same day. Investment

Indian wedding photography prices in Birmingham

Wedding photography from £850 — five hours of coverage.

Photography and cinematic film from £1,500.

Most Indian weddings need considerably more than five hours and many run across several days. We quote on the events you are holding, the hours you need, the size of team required and travel — not on a tier that was decided before we knew anything about your wedding.
