Venue guide
The Botanical Gardens is the opposite problem to the NEC. There is no shortage of beautiful backdrop here — the difficulty is that there is too much of it, and a wedding day does not contain enough daylight to use it all.
Victorian glasshouses, mature gardens and the bandstand sit within a few minutes’ walk of each other in Edgbaston, close enough to central Birmingham that guests arrive easily. We photograph weddings and pre-wedding sessions here regularly, in every season.
Light
The glasshouses, and how to use them
The glasshouses are the reason most couples choose this venue, and they behave very differently from an ordinary room.
Light through glass
On an overcast Birmingham day the glasshouse roof acts as an enormous softbox — even, flattering light with almost no effort. That is the best-case scenario and it is common here.
On a bright day the same roof throws harsh, patchy shadows across faces. We work to the shaded side or wait for cloud, rather than putting you under dappled light and hoping.
Humidity and lenses
Moving from cold outdoor air into the tropical house fogs lenses instantly. It is a known problem with a known answer, which is acclimatising equipment before we need it — but it is the reason an unprepared photographer loses the first few minutes inside.
Green colour cast
Dense foliage reflects green onto skin. Left uncorrected everyone looks faintly unwell. It is fixable and we fix it, but it is worth knowing why some glasshouse photographs you have seen elsewhere look slightly off.
Space
The glasshouses are narrow. They are excellent for couple portraits and small family groups, and poor for a group of sixty. Plan the large groups for outdoors or the lawns.
Through the year
What the gardens give you by season
- Spring — blossom and fresh planting. The best outdoor colour of the year and the least reliable weather.
- Summer — full gardens, long evenings, and a real golden hour on the lawns. Also the busiest, so portrait locations need timing around other visitors.
- Autumn — the most underrated. Warm colour outdoors and the glasshouses as a warm, weather-proof fallback.
- Winter — short days. Daylight can be gone by four, so the timeline has to be built backwards from sunset. The glasshouses carry the day and still look green when everything outside is bare.
Whatever the season, the glasshouses mean rain never ruins the photographs here. That is a real advantage over an outdoor-only venue in Birmingham.
Running the day
Timeline, access and practicalities
Build the timeline around sunset
The gardens are at their best in the last ninety minutes of daylight. We will tell you what time that is for your date and ask for twenty minutes of it.
Everything is a walk
Glasshouses, lawns and bandstand are close but not adjacent, and a bride in a lehenga or a long dress does not move across gravel and grass quickly. Allow more time than the map suggests, and consider the ground underfoot after rain.
Public access
The gardens are open to visitors. Unless you have exclusive use, there will be members of the public around. We work with it — it is rarely a problem and we frame around it.
Photography fees and permissions
The gardens charge their own fee for photography sessions that are not part of a booked wedding, and conditions change. Confirm the current position with the venue directly when booking a pre-wedding shoot here. We will tell you before you book rather than after.
Civil ceremonies
The venue holds a licence for civil ceremonies. Confirm current licensed rooms and capacities with the venue, as these are reviewed periodically.
Cultural
Asian weddings and traditional dress here
The gardens suit traditional dress exceptionally well. Red and gold lehengas against green foliage, or a sari in the Mediterranean house, give colour combinations you cannot get in a banqueting hall.
Practically: the glasshouses handle couple portraits and immediate family, not three hundred guests. Many of our couples use the Botanical Gardens for the civil ceremony or the pre-wedding shoot and hold the larger cultural celebration elsewhere. That combination works well and we cover both.
